Back to School Health Fair

Back To School and Health Fair 2011 A Great Success!

Desert View Hospital is proud to have sponsored this year's Children's Back to School Health Fair. This important annual community event was held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 from 10 am to 2 pm at Desert View Hospital and was attended by hundreds of Pahrump residents and children preparing for the upcoming school year. Below is a slideshow of photographs from this year's successful community event. Thanks to all who attended, and to all who participated.

The numbers are in and more than 750 Nye County residents attended the 4th Annual Nye Communities Coalition Back to School Health Fair on August 6 at Desert View Hospital. Most of the health services were delivered at no cost to children with the exception of a small fee for sports physicals.

  •   More than 100 children received almost 300 immunizations
  •   150 children had a dental screening
  •   115 children had their vision checked
  •   50 children had sports physicals
  •   500 hot dogs and bags of chips were given away
  •   1,500 bottles of ice-cold water were given away

According to Stacy Smith, Executive Director, of NyECC “the generosity and participation by the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation was greatly appreciated. Nikki and her team of more than 30 volunteers gave away 334 pair of socks, 334 new pair of shoes and 209 backpacks. Community organizations and individuals stepped up to help increase the number of backpacks, school supplies and money to help defray the cost of bringing Goodie Two Shoes to Nye County.”

According to www.goodietwoshoes.org , Nikki and Tony Berti, co-founded the Goodie Two Shoes Giveaway in 2003, a one-day event to provide disadvantaged children with new shoes. They patterned their Giveaway after a similar but much simpler event they volunteered for annually during Tony's playing days with the NFL's San Diego Chargers. (1995-1998) Upon Tony's retirement from the NFL in 2001, they brought the concept home to Las Vegas.

What makes GTSF different? Their programming is based on the premise that we don’t just provide a child with a new pair of shoes. We measure their feet on-site to ensure proper fit. We pair them one-on-one with a community volunteer who takes a special interest and walks them through the process. We make them the center of attention, and we empower them with choice; by giving them the opportunity to select any pair of shoes from our large inventory of high-quality athletic shoes, just like the ones their friends at school are wearing.

According to Tim Wigchers, Communications Coordinator for NyECC, “this is the only event Goodie Two Shoes does outside of Clark County. In fact most of their events are in a school setting. We feel very privileged to have them at our event serving children in Nye County that may have had to wait a long time for a new pair of shoes. James Oscarson and Desert View Hospital were key partners in providing planning, their facility and arranging for many of the events logistics. NyECC looks forward to partnering with Desert View Hospital on events and activities that meet the needs of the community.”
